RARE 1947 TRANSITIONAL LG-2
Gibson LG-2 Transitional Flat Top Acoustic Guitar, c. 1946, made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, sunburst top, dark stained
back and sides finish, spruce top, Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, mahogany back, sides and neck. This is a
beautiful early post-WWII transitional model of the LG-2, Gibson's most popular small body acoustic from the 1940s and '50s.
LG-2s from 1946-47 guitars have no serial or factory order numbers but the combination of the Block logo
(starting 1947) and the waffle back Kluson three on a strip tuners (only seen on 1947 instruments) date this
scarce transitional instrument as made in 1947.
While production records on LG-2s between 1948 and 1950 note roughly 1000 instruments a year, those from 1947
are significantly rarer, as Gibson hadn’t fully ramped up after the war.
This particular instrument has a warm woody tone rich in low mids with a bright clarity at the higher frequencies
ideal for fingerpicking. Action is excellent, neck is dead straight, finish is original with typical overall finish crazing.
Two internal braces have been professionally reglued and a longitudinal crack in the original Brazilian Rosewood
bridge has been cleanly and solidly repaired. Original finish overall retains a glossy luster merely having been
hand polished and cleaned of 74 years of playing.
No buzzes or deadspots with better than 80% of original fret life remaining after releveling and recrowning.
*New medium 11-56 D’Addario phosphor bronze strings.
*Replaced black solid ebony bridge pins.
