Description
Walter Mettal made bows in his workshop nearBubenreuth, Germany for over forty years. His high-grade bows are used and prized
by many professional orchestral players around the world, although they are now
scarce to rare in terms of availability – particularly violin bows.
This
burnt orange (typical of genuine Brazilian pernambuco wood)
vintage bow features an octagonal stick
of pernambuco, silver fittings, and the maker’s signature coat of arms stamp on
the frog. I estimate the date to be late 50s to mid 60s. I purchased this bow
myself from Kagan & Gaines in 1977, while in junior college in Chicago. I
used it in orchestra for one year, and it has been unused all this time – 43 years.
This bow helped give me the best sound in the junior orchestra I was in
according to my teacher. A great bow makes a world of difference in your
playing. The right bow not only serves to pull the sound from your instrument,
but it also makes that sound warm, full, smooth, and resonant. A high-quality
bow is responsive to the touch, allowing the player to create a full spectrum
of sound from their palette. When well matched to both player and instrument, a
good bow will allow the violin, viola, or cello to sing to its full potential. Shipping will be either FedEx or UPS Ground and will include insurance. A flat rate which includes insurance of to the lower 48 USA states will be charged.
