Description
Kamaka Guitar 1967This beautiful custom guitar is one-of-a-kind. Built by Samuel Kamaka Jr. in Honolulu in 1967, it has been owned by one family since then and well taken care of.
Unusually shaped (pineapple?), it is a classical nylon-strung guitar with fan bracing. The back and sides are beautiful Koa wood from Hawaii as one would expect. The top is spruce. All solid high grade wood.
White celluloid binding on the top and back with b/w purfling. The Koa neck has a center piece of ebony for strength. The fingerboard is rosewood. The peghead has a thick overlay of bookmatched mango and has ebony violin pegs that are well fitted and easy to tune(especially using the original peg turner tool). The heelcap is also Mango and the backstrip is rosewood with maple. The bridge is Koa with ebony and boxwood inserts. It has a bone nut and saddle. It looks like a standard dovetail for the neck joint.
It has had a few repairs, the bridge has been off and reglued and the back braces have been reglued. Some of the celluloid binding has been reglued. There is very little fret or playing wear. It plays like a dream and sounds warm and wonderful, if a little quiet. Check out the video?.

It has not been played very much in its lifetime and it deserves to be! Please ask any questions or for more photos.
