  • Condition: This violin has been well-cared for and is in very healthy shape, without cracks or seam separations. Aside from some surface scratching under the E-string fine tuner, the rich brown varnish is pretty much intact.

    Description

    GREAT-SOUNDING OLD VIOLIN
    This wonderful old violin produces a full rich tone, resonant and vibrant, with very strong projection. The violin has no label, and the only clues to its possible maker or place of origin are the bridge, which is marked “Aubert / Made in France” and the number “2784” written faintly in pencil at one edge inside the back. My guess is that it may be French in origin, though the varnish and body shape also appear similar to German violins I have seen. (Bear in mind that this is my opinion only - I am a violinist and collector and NOT a violin expert). My guess is that this instrument dates to the first half of the 20th century, but no date appears anywhere on the violin.  It is a full-sized (4/4) violin.
    I
    replaced the old strings with a new set of Tonicas and the violin now sounds wonderful, projecting a strong and resonant sound throughout the range. This violin has one-piece back with moderate flaming, and the varnish is a warm brown in color.
    The bow that comes with this violin is obviously an old one.  It appears to be made of pernambuco wood and is in very good condition, needing only a re-hairing to be returned to its peak shape. Once again, there are no markings on the bow that might give a clue as to its origin.  It pulls a good strong tone from the violin.
