    Description

This is an antique 4/4 Jacobus Stainer violin copy, which unlike most Stainer copies, was made in Austria.  The violin has been refinished with an amber oil stain (from International Violin).  Pegs, strings (I'm pretty sure they are Thomastik Dominant), chin rest, and tailpiece (with one tuner) are new.  The Stainer label inside is old and in poor condition, but you can see it is a Stainer label.  In addition there is a newer looking "Made in Austria" label, which might date the violin or its importation into the US to around 1920 (approximately when US law first required the country of origin to be printed in English on imported instruments); although the violin looks older than that to me.  The instrument is really quite attractive.  However, the neck is slightly twisted and the peg box is slightly tilted to one side.  Also, the neck angle is rather shallow (which was not that uncommon at some point in violin history) and, therefore, the fingerboard is relatively low, which means the bridge has to be rather short in order to achieve acceptable string heights above the fingerboard.  Characteristic of Stainer violins, the belly and back are significantly arched.  The instrument is set up to play.  To my "tin ear," it's not the best sounding violin, which might be partly attributable to the low neck angle, but it is loud (probably due to large interior volume created by the high arching).  It has a two-piece back with
    very
subtle flames.  The back is embossed with the name "Stainer."  I'm only selling it to reduce the number of violins in my collection.
Also included to compliment the violin is a beautiful antique, refinished wooden GSB (a well known maker) "coffin" case.  The outside of the case was stripped and varnished and the inside was decoupaged with a musical notes patterned paper and maroon velvet-like cloth.  The brass bow clip is original to the case.  The exterior bottom of the case is embossed with the "GSB" seal.  The case retains its original brass hardware (handle, hooks & eyes, and hinges).
The violin and case will be carefully packed and quickly shipped to the winning bidder.  Thanks for looking.
