Andrzej Kalata was born in Podhale, Poland's southernmost region, at the foot of the Tatra Mountains. His passion for violin making was evident as a young boy, when he indulged in researching and repairing folk instruments. He credits his development as a craftsman to the wide range of musical instruments and the rich folk music culture he was immersed in during his youth, which nurtured a burning interest in music that was sparked and honed by Wojciech Topa, a fellow violinist from Podhalan, who the developing work of Kalata was of great influence.
