HOUSLAŘ, KOLÍN 1923
“
Ladislav Herclík born 1895, died 1968. Son of violinmaker František Herclík, a brother of violinmaker Josef Bohumil Herclík. In the years 1909-1912 studied at his father in Staré Benátky and Mladá Boleslav (Cities in the Czech Republic 30-40 km north of Prague). Till 1913 worked at his fathers workshop, then in Kladno (10km north from Prague) with the violin maker Alois Bittner. In the year 1914 he went to Zürich to work in the J. E. Züst company. In 1915 he went to the army where he worked as an army-violin maker - in Debrecen (Hungary) with the violin maker Gërzy Tenszer and later in Budapest with István Nagy. After the war he returned to his father's workshop. In the year 1920 his father bought him a villa in Kolín (50km east from Prague) where he settled and opened his own workshop fulfilling a promise to František Kmoch (Czech bandmaster and composer from Kolín (march music) - Herclík had promised him to settle in Kolín and to work there as a violinmaker). His instruments are cleanly worked out. He worked after Stradivari and Guarneri. He used spirit varnishes.
Many violins from Czech manufacturers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are as or better than many top French and German violins, which cost much more.
