Sexy outside.
You get a new body shape born of the kind of design thinking that goes into a well-bred European car. The new Capri’s hood slopes downward smoothly to a no-nonsense black and bright grille and dual rectangular
headlamps.That racy rear is actually a trunk lid that doubles as a third door. It’s Styling that's more than just pretty. Refined by wind tunnel testing, the new Capri’s aerodynamics produce less drag than a 78 Corvette. Very slippery.
Capri’s standard engine is a 2.3 litre four-cylinder overhead cam power plant. If the spirit moves you,
opt for a 2.8 litre V-6 or a 5.0 litre V-8.
Sexy inside.
Slide into the cockpit and you settle comfortably into high back buckets. Sight down over the sloping hood. Let your eyes roam an array of standard instruments that includes trip odometer, tachometer, and oil pressure, engine temperature, and ammeter dial gauges. There’s a four speed floor mounted shift, a three spoke sport steering wheel, and a lockable glove box. Stalk controls are mounted within immediate reach on the column. The '79 Capri’s handling is based on a suspension system that teams a strut/coil spring independent front design with a rear that's engineered around a coil spring/four bar link assembly. Front disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering are standard.
Capri RS.
If you think the base Capri is something, look into the new Capri RS. It’s
something else. For a sticker price less than 5 over the base car, you get a Capri with a Radial Sport Suspension that includes a heftier front stabilizer bar, revised shock absorber rates, a rear stabilizer bar and radial ply tires. And for good measure, dual sport mirrors, a decorative hood scoop, blackout grille, sports wheel covers, plus all the basic goodies. RS stabilizer bars included with 5.0 litre V-8 option.
Capri Turbo RS.
Here’s all the engineering of the Capri RS plus turbocharging and Rally Suspension. Heart of this Capri is a 2.3 litre engine mated to Capri’s
AiResearch T0-3 turbocharger that supplies an extra power boost under heavy throttle conditions like hard
acceleration during highway driving, and base engine cruising effort under a light throttle. Underneath, the Rally Suspension is tuned to low profile Michelin TRX steel belted radials on forged aluminum alloy wheels. (Restricted use spare furnished.)
