Description
Up for sale, a circa 1970 Gibson J-45 ADJ vintage square shoulder dreadnought, recently serviced here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and complete with a hardshell case. A fairly unique and short-lived J-45 iteration, this instrument features a belly down bridge, height-adjustable rosewood saddle, small pickguard, full 1 11/16" nut width, and bare mahogany headstock face with Gibson logo and script J-45 truss rod cover. With the tonewood pairing of solid mahogany back and sides and a solid X-braced spruce top, this J-45 is particularly warm and woody-sounding, with an overarching sweetness and growl in the bass register when you dig in hard with a flatpick. The trebles have a nice sparkle and airy resonance, and the midrange is rich and smooth. Weighing 5lbs, this J-45 has been professionally setup with fresh 12-54 bronze strings and easy-playing action.
The three-piece mahogany neck has a modestly chunky C-shaped profile carve with generous shoulder and ideal substance, measuring .865" deep at the 1st fret and .985" at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard retains the original “fretless wonder” fretwire, showing only light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3. The guitar plays cleanly in every register up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and ideally adjusted truss rod. The original nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width, a notable feature as all J-45s from the latter half of the '60s had Gibson's more slender (and less widely regarded) 1 9/16" nut. On the headstock, the original Gibson Deluxe double line strip tuners are intact with original white buttons. The back of the headstock has an extremely subtle volute, "Made in USA" stamp, and a small "2" denoting a Factory 2nd for some small finish flaw undetectable after a half century.
The rosewood belly-down bridge retains the stock height-adjustable rosewood saddle, and there's a tiny bit of finish loss just beyond the forward edge of the bridge. The endpin has been cleanly doweled and redrilled. The original Sunburst nitro lacquer gloss finish exhibits broad lacquer checking and various nicks on the body as a whole, and the finish is slightly muted in its presentation, more semi-gloss appearance on the back and sides, likely from contact with a case lining.
A modern hardshell case is included.
