Description
This is a very rare pre-war Gibson HG-22 guitar only produced in 1932 with very few ever made. This is the HG-22 "Classic" featured in the July 2021 issue of "Vintage Guitar" magazine. With a FON of 206, it places this guitar as one of the first 14 fret flat tops Gibson ever made. This is the 2nd oldest registered HG-22 as registered on page 102 of "Spann's Guide to Gibson", and were referred to as "double rimmed" guitars because they contained a unique inner-rim system designed to not only offer extra top support but was also designed to eliminate an over powering bass response. Large and booming, they produce an unexpectedly powerful sound in ways similar to that created by the National and Dobro resonator guitars, but with overtones of wood rather than metal. Gibson only mentioned these guitars in their 1932 catalogue and were expensive in construction stemming from the baffle system and the 4 extra F holes. The HG-22 features "northern air-seasoned maple" for its back, sides, and internal chamber. Spruce finished in brown, with a small sunburst at the bridge, was used for the top. Both the top and back were bound in white ivoroid. The Honduras mahogany neck, meeting the body at the 14th fret, contained a truss rod and a bound rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays. The HG-22 guitar retailed for in 1932 and are considered among the best sounding all-wood slide guitars ever made,
This specific instrument has had the tuners, truss rod cover, and nut/saddle changed, but the tuners do appear to be very old and working. The lower bout measures 14 1/2 inches wide, 10 3/8" at the upper, 9 5/8" at the waist, with a body depth of 4 1/4 at the rear and 3 1/2" at the front. It also has several repaired top cracks, a side crack, a small rear center seam separation that were repaired professionally. There are small wing pieces of the upper f holes and 3rd fret dot is missing. All the binding is there but does show some spots that have shrunk a little. The first few frets and back of the neck show normal wear for a guitar that is nearly 90 years old.
The guitar has recently had an inspection and luthier set up including neck alignment and truss rod adjustment, action adjustment, intonation adjustment and fitted with new strings. Comes with vintage Gibson chip board alligator case that has splitting seams, but it will protect the guitar when I pack it with bubble wrap. The red lined case and other items shown in the first "Vintage Guitar Classics" photo are

in the sale of this guitar. I will include a copy of the July 2021 "Vintage Guitar" magazine in which this guitar is featured as a "Classic". I have tried to show in the photos the imperfections of the guitar and the included chip board alligator case.
I have only seen one other Gibson HG guitar and that one was missing the baffle system, while this HG-22 is in much better condition and still has it's original baffle system.
In the 1994 book "Gibson's Fabulous Flat-Top Guitars, An Illustrated History & Guide" by Master luthier Dan Erlewine, it says that most of these guitars had the baffle system removed, but those that still have the baffle "are among the best sounding all-wood slide guitars ever made."
The 2021 Vintage Guitar Price Guide values the 1932 HG-22 between ,200 - ,600.
